New Member Symposium

As a new member of AAPM, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the association and to be unaware of the benefits and opportunities available to members. At this year's AAPM Annual Meeting, we will host a New Member Symposium where you can learn more about the organization, member resources, opportunities to get involved, and about topics of particular interest to new professionals. We encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity to learn valuable information and to grow your professional network.

The New Member Symposium is a (free) ticket option available to members who have joined since June 2015. Attendees registered for this event will receive a raffle ticket. Enter to win a complimentary registration for the 2019 Annual Meeting in San Antonio or the Spring Clinical Meeting in Orlando!

In addition, all new members who register for the Symposium will receive a drink ticket, good for one complimentary soda or beer served after the New Member Symposium during the social with committee chairs from the 4 AAPM Councils.

Night Out – Country Music Hall of Fame

You are encouraged to meet your colleagues at the venue for limited light snacks and then make your way to one of the many restaurants in the area for dinner. Or, dine first and make your way to the event for a bite of something sweet at the end of the evening!

AAPM will take over the entire Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, featuring two expansive floors of gallery space, and safeguarding over 2.5 million diverse artifacts. Follow the evolution of country music, within the context of American history. For those who like to dance, Gary Jenkins & the Thundering Hearts will be playing upstairs. If you've ever yearned to try line dancing, two instructors will give lessons to those willing to try!

Each adult Night Out ticket will include 1 drink ticket, good for beer or a glass of wine. Please make your plans in advance and dine at a restaurant of your choice and favorite cuisine! We encourage you to either make reservations on your own, or with help from the restaurant desk at the Music City Center.

Please note: Trade in your Night Out ticket for a lanyard/event map required for admittance. Stop by the AAPM Registration Desk on Monday or Tuesday for your Ticket/Lanyard trade.

Review Courses

These courses provide a good review of medical physics for physicists entering the specialty, physicists in need of continuing education credits, and physicists who would benefit from a refresher course taught by experts in the field. All learning materials will be provided to registrants on a thumb drive; no paper handouts. The courses will be held concurrently on Saturday and Sunday. The review courses will be submitted to the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc. (CAMPEP) for MPCEC Credits. Refer to the tabs below for course outlines.

Annual Student Meeting – The Role of Automation in Clinics of the Future

This year’s Annual Student Meeting explores the role of automation in the radiation oncology clinic. Automation is heavily relied on in other industries, and is becoming an increasingly important topic for our field as we evolve to maximize efficiency while maintaining a high standard of quality. Drs. Steve Jiang and Kevin Moore are leaders in this space and will each give a 20-minute presentation on automation strategies used at their respective institutions. This will be followed by a 50-minute discussion facilitated by student moderators and the audience.

Non-Clinical Career Expo

The Career Expo, hosted by the Working Group to Promote Non-Clinical Career Paths for Medical Physicists, will take place in the Davidson Foyer immediately following the Student Meeting. In order to maximize the ability for attendees to connect with many different companies, we are implementing a speed dating format! Students, trainees, and young professionals are encouraged to connect individually with representatives to understand a physicist's role at his/her company. This is not meant to be a job fair, but rather a place to facilitate discussions about future career paths and roles that medical physicists fill outside of the clinic.

WGSTR Student and Trainee Lunch

Committees, Councils, and Task Groups, Oh My! The Working Group on Student and Trainee Research (WGSTR) is hosting a luncheon discussion on the many ways to get involved in AAPM. Student and faculty members representing various committees, councils, and task groups within AAPM will be on-hand to facilitate discussion and answer questions. Lunch tickets are available for $10 when you register for the meeting, or you may join the event at no cost (no lunch). Ticket holders will be allowed into the event first to collect box lunches, followed by non-ticket holders.

Medphys Slam Logo
MedPhys Slam is a research communication competition in which participants prepare a three-minute presentation aimed at sharing the significance of their science in a compelling yet understandable manner. Participants will be judged by a non-physicist panel on three equally weighted categories: comprehension/content, communication, and engagement. Preliminary events held by AAPM Chapters will each select one winner to represent their chapter in the final competition at the AAPM Annual Meeting.
Interview Workshop

The Students and Trainees Subcommittee (STSC) would like to invite students, trainees, and young professionals to attend an interview workshop to practice their interviewing skills and receive feedback from real interviewers. The first portion of the workshop includes concrete guidance and examples of how to respond in an interview setting; this aspect of the session is designed to be an informational introduction to interviews in general. The second portion of the workshop involves group interviews for those seeking careers in academic, research, or clinical environments, in addition to regulatory or industry positions.

Expanding Horizons

Awardees from the 2017 Expanding Horizons Travel Grant cycle will discuss their experiences traveling to conferences that are not specifically geared toward traditional medical physics, focusing on broad scientific impact and opportunities for medical physicists in various fields. The Expanding Horizons paper poster session gives a venue for AAPM conference attendees to meet and discuss with awardees, learn the hot topics and emerging research areas presented at these conferences, and understand the relevance to future medical physics research. Students interested in applying for the 2018 application cycle are highly encouraged to attend!

Breaking out of the Clinic: Non-traditional Medical Physics Careers

This symposium organized by the Working Group to Promote Non-Clinical Career Paths for Medical Physicists will discuss non-clinical career options and how to prepare for them. Three physicists working outside of the clinic will talk briefly on their experience. Don't worry if they didn't answer your question, there will be an open panel at the end of the session.

Connecting Corporate Affiliates and students at the AAPM Annual Meeting

Participating corporate affiliates will be conducting demonstrations designed specifically for trainees, with the purpose of providing students with:

  • Contacts for future purchases/partnerships
  • Awareness of what products are available and will become available in the next couple years, and how they will help with clinical workflows
  • What opportunities exist for collaboration with each company and how they utilize clinical medical physicists to inform their product development

Get to know your Future Partners AND enter for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card!!

  • When Student registrants pick up registration materials, they will be given a 'Get to know your Future Partner' card.
  • Each 'Get to know your Future Partner' card will list questions provided by corporate affiliate partners participating in the program. The questions can be educational or fun!
  • Students will be instructed to visit each participating corporate affiliate to learn about their company and to figure out the answer to the questions listed on the card.
  • Once a card is complete, drop it off at the AAPM Member Resources counter, located at the front of Hall B.
  • All cards must be submitted NO LATER than 1:30 pm, Wednesday, August 1.
  • The drawing will take place at 1:45 pm on Wednesday, August 1.
  • Participants do not need to be present to win. To qualify, all questions must be answered correctly. The winner will be notified following the meeting.
Schedule an Appointment / Make a Connection

Corporate affiliate partners welcome the opportunity to meet with students anytime throughout the Annual Meeting. However, students are also invited to schedule appointments with vendors as well.

  • To schedule an appointment:
    • Pre-Meeting: Corporate partners have identified specific dates and time on the calendar below to be used for scheduling appointments pre-meeting. Contact the company directly to make the appointment.
    • At the Meeting:
      • Participating corporate affiliates will be identified with a floor decal placed in the aisle at their booth. Students can visit the vendor at any time during the meeting to schedule an appointment. Please note, it is recommended students approach vendors early in the meeting if scheduling at the booth.

Virtual Library

Selected presentations given at the Annual Meetings and other AAPM Meetings are posted in the AAPM Virtual Library. Posted presentations include streaming audio of speakers and presentation slides.

AAPM plans to digitally capture the following session types at the 60th Annual Meeting & Exhibition for posting in the AAPM Virtual Library. The digital capture list will be available at the Member Services Counter:

  • Proffered sessions are not included in the AAPM Virtual Library.
