The MedPhys Problem Series: A New Calculation Focused Medical Physics Lecture Series

Purpose: To publish a medical physics educational series on the YouTube video platform dedicated to providing high quality, worked out problems to increase the interest of prospective medical physics students and supplement the material of formal educational programs.

Methods: A total of 17 medical physics videos were published as one collective playlist on YouTube. The video content is comprised of 12 calculation based lectures and 5 informative medical physics videos. The calculation based videos consisted of working through 7 large multi-component questions with an average video length of 25 minutes. Questions were hand-picked from well-recognized sources and additional content was included to increase the overall educational value of each particular question. Two criteria were utilized when selecting prospective lecture calculations: i) The overall educational value to the viewer, ii) the number of concepts that could be introduced and explained thoroughly with one comprehensive example. The incorporation of 5 non-calculation based videos were published to provide prospective students with information acquired through personal experience that may otherwise be difficult to obtain. In addition to the “in-house� produced medical physics videos, a collection of the author’s favorite field specific videos were included into the overall channel content.

Results: From the channel’s first production, there have been a total of 27,697 views. The most popular video uploaded was ‘Kerma, Collision Kerma, and Absorbed Dose Part 1’ with 2,085 views. The channel averages 619 views per week and consistently receives positive feedback.

Conclusion: There is a strong demand for medical physics videos published on YouTube. The most popular videos covered specific medical physics topics. Future work will incorporate topics in the areas of Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imaging.
