Physicists should be an essential part of setting CT protocols in an institution. All physicists have a scientific understanding of the acquisition parameters that can be set in modern CT scanners and how they can impact dose and image quality. However, few physicists have an understanding of how the radiologist interprets CT images. This session will begin with a radiologist explaining how they interpret a CT image and what image information they deem to be important when rendering a diagnosis. The session will then move on to address how acquisition parameters can be chosen in both routine scans (e.g., routine brain or abdomen) and complex scanning (e.g., cardiac or angiography) to ensure the best image quality is attained at an acceptable radiation dose.
