Room: Room 209

Non-clinical careers offer many unique benefits and challenges to medical physicists, but many physicists are not familiar with these careers or how to embark on them. In this course, three representatives will discuss non-clinical career options for medical physicists. This session will begin by introducing the numerous non-clinical careers available, based largely on the white paper authored by the Working Group on Non-Clinical Career Paths for Medical Physicists. The most common positions for medical physicists outside of the clinic will then be detailed, compared, and contrasted with typical clinical physics positions. The next part of the session will focus on supplementing a medical physics education, detailing how to best prepare for non-clinical medical physics careers. Specific topics of discussion will include potential additional classes, how to locate resources outside of programs, and important supplementary skills that should be learned and developed during training. The remainder of this session will be directed to the medical physicist who has completed training and is working in the clinic. This section will present ideas for supplemental training that can be pursued while working full time, strategies to search for non-clinical positions, and advice on how best to highlight skills being sought for these positions when applying and interviewing.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will become familiar with the wide variety of non-clinical medical physics careers.
2. Participants will become familiar with the AAPM resources available for seeking and maintaining a non-clinical medical physics career.
3. Participants will become familiar with characteristics and skills that are desirable in non-clinical medical physics roles.
4. Participants will gain an appreciation of the non-technical challenges faced when moving from a clinical education or environment to non-clinical roles.
