(Sunday, 7/29/2018) 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Room: Exhibit Hall

Purpose: Todays radiation oncology clinical landscape is affected by rapid technological changes. Physicists, who are the drivers of this change, must empower their clinical colleagues to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and protocols to maintain standard of care. To address this issue, a search term driven knowledge base (KB) has been created to ensure accurate, efficient and peer reviewed knowledge access across the clinic.

Methods: WordPress, an open source content management system (CMS) with several relevant plugins has been installed and configured as a single site environment on an Apache server. A workflow has been set up to ensure all content uploaded to KB is peer-reviewed by subject matter experts. The KB portal has been qualitatively evaluated by individuals and focus groups consisting of physicists, dosimetrists, therapists, IT specialists, nursing and administrative staff.

Results: Features like “Google like autocomplete search bar, Keyword based search, Site front page and MS Word based content addition, “Wikipedia like navigation in the article, ability to provide user feedback, PDF upload with viewer and search, and responsive design (device agnostic) were implemented. This intranet site is currently online and accessible across the hospital.

Conclusion: It is possible for institutions to build a customized advanced knowledge base with free and open source CMS WordPress with relatively few resources. KB portals can be a platform for providing consolidated, relevant content in one location, for sharing and distributing knowledge and for bringing people together for subject matter information exchange.
