Purpose: The Gammaknife Icon® High Definition Motion Management system (HDMM) provides a real-time motion monitoring by tracking the position of an infrared (IR) reflective marker placed on the patient. However, there is no solution provided by the vendor to perform quality assurance (QA) on the accuracy of the HDMM. We have developed a novel motion system based on accurate and precise positioning mechanisms found in 3D printer technology to provide an accurate motion platform for verifying the HDMM.
Methods: A low-cost 3D printer kit provides the motion axes, electronics, and firmware to build a programmable motion platform with a 0.1 mm positioning accuracy. An IR reflective marker was attached to the motion platform. Custom G-code (positioning instructions) was written to move the platform by a pre-defined distance in each cardinal direction and return to the starting position. The position of the IR marker was tracked with the HDMM and the tracked position was compared to the motions defined in the G-code.
Results: The developed novel motion system was successfully implemented to conduct testing QAs for the HDMM. The change in position of the IR marker tracked by the IR camera system matched the position programmed in the G-code within 0.3 mm.
Conclusion: We innovatively designed an accurate and precise motion system, which is derived from the 3D printing-based kit, to function as a QA device to perform QA of the HDMM. This motion platform also has the potential to be adapted to work with other motion management systems such as Align RT and Calypso.
