An Open-Source Image Quality Assurance Software for Matlab/Octave

Purpose: To provide an open-source, multi-use software that enables image quality analysis through calculation of region-of-interest (ROI) measurements. The software will be easy to use and will not require a well-versed programmer to run it. It will also accommodate user customization and variation in ROI adjustment for varying image phantoms, with the modification of Microsoft Excel files. Open code will allow for deeper customization of calculated metrics.

Methods: ROI templates, of various sizes and shapes, are defined relative to localization points on baseline phantom images. The selection of the localization points on subsequent images enables a mapping of the ROIs to these images. Excel coordinates can be manipulated at the discretion of the user to allow for full variation in ROI number, placement, and shape. Matlab/Octave are used to calculate image quality metrics, established by TG-142. This analysis, along with the generation of a report, is automated after the selection of the localization points. The software was evaluated over the course of four months at one treatment vault.

Results: During the evaluation period, some metrics have failed to meet the analysis tolerances, but were rectified through a recalibration of the imaging panel. This evaluation showed effective analysis and calculation of image quality metrics.

Conclusion: This multi-use software combines efficiency and accuracy to make the quality assurance process subjective and easy to modify according to user specifications. The software is meant to be developed further and then released for public use.
