Night Out – La Villita Historic Arts Village

Tuesday, July 16 −− 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM
418 Villita St, an easy walk from the Convention Center

You are encouraged to meet your colleagues at the venue for limited light snacks and then make your way to one of the many restaurants in the area for dinner. Or, dine first and make your way to the event for a bite of something sweet at the end of the evening!

La Villita, settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city's first neighborhoods, now serves as an artists’ market with tree-lined walkways, shops and galleries.

The outdoor Arneson River Theater will feature live music by the Juke Box Heroes Quartet. Known for their acoustic guitar, acoustic drum (Djembe) and three-part harmonies, the band specializes in the greatest Motown hits and classic rock of the 70’s.

Inside Venue Villita, The Pictures Band will cover a variety of songs starting from the 50’s to the 90’s, plus the Top 40, Disco songs, funk and country. Look for outdoor games, including giant Jenga and ladder golf just outside on Venue Villita’s patio.

Each adult Night Out ticket will include 1 drink ticket, good for beer or a glass of wine. No ticket is required for soft drinks. Please make your plans in advance and dine at a restaurant of your choice and favorite cuisine! We encourage you to either make reservations on your own, or with help from the restaurant desk at the Convention Center.

Annual Student Meeting: Patient Communication -- A Future Role for Medical Physicists

Sunday, July 14 −− 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM followed by the Undergrad Welcome Session −− 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Stars at Night Ballroom 4, Convention Center

The Annual Student Meeting this year will explore patient communication and how it specifically pertains to medical physicists. Research suggests that there is a link between patient stress and anxiety regarding technical aspects before images or treatment have even begun. Questions regarding radiation safety or accuracy of delivery are often not addressed by medical physicists despite being very well suited to answer. Drs. Todd Atwood and Derek Brown have completed a phase II clinical trial at the University of California San Diego to investigate a new clinical role for medical physicists in direct patient care. They will give a presentation on the work & vision of their findings followed by a discussion facilitated by student moderators and questions from the audience. Join us in this session to find out how this new role for clinical medical physicists can improve patient care.

Non-Clinical Career Expo

Sunday, July 14 −− 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Stars at Night Ballroom Foyer, Convention Center

The Career Expo, hosted by the Working Group to Promote Non-Clinical Career Paths for Medical Physicists, will take place in the Stars at Night Ballroom Foyer immediately following the Student Meeting. In order to maximize the ability for attendees to connect with many different companies, we are implementing a speed dating format! Students, trainees, and young professionals are encouraged to connect individually with representatives to understand a physicist's role at his/her company. This is not meant to be a job fair, but rather a place to facilitate discussions about future career paths and roles that medical physicists fill outside of the clinic.

To participate, please contact Gaurav Shukla or Krystal Kirby from the Working Group to Promote Non-Clinical Career Paths for Medical Physicists.

To be effective researchers, we need both high quality research and the ability to communicate it to others. We are frequently required to communicate our research in many different formats, including: grant and scholarship applications, conference abstracts and presentations, and manuscripts. This interactive workshop will provide tips and tools to identify the key concepts that will effectively communicate the impact of your research.
