5D Imaging and Treatment Planning for Radiation Therapy

Radiotherapy has been a forerunner of personalized medicine, developing individualized treatments based on patient-specific anatomical information. Despite many advances in radiotherapy in the past decade that have effectively enhanced local or locoregional tumor control for many patients, there are new challenges for radiotherapy in the era of precision medicine. A major challenge for radiotherapy to further widen the therapeutic window in the era of precision medicine is to further improve radiation dose conformity to the defined target volume through advances in imaging and image guidance technologies. This proposed symposium will present recent developments in advance d 5D imaging (CT and MRI) and therapy techniques that are designed to address current limiting factors of dose conformity include: (a) geographic miss caused by uncertainties in target identification, including inter-observer variability and inter-imaging variability; (b) geographic miss caused by motion and deformation, including breathing, heartbeats and organ filling. It will demonstrate the physical principles and technical developments of these state-of-the-art techniques as well as showcase examples of the 5D techniques in contouring, planning, and treatment assessment. Potential clinical impacts and further developments in 5D technology will be discussed At the end of the presentation.
