Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of an innovative method of teaching in a two-day Gamma Knife workshop provided to residents from a medical physics residency consortium.
Methods: The PanoptoTM software was used to record both PowerPoint and audio presentations. The links to all pre-recorded presentations on 10 selected topics related to Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and radiation therapy (SRT) with emphasis on physics aspect were distributed one week before the workshop to eight physics residents and their faculty from three different clinical sites located at 3 to 4 hours of driving distance. Each presentation, consisting of objectives, main body of content and 3-5 knowledge-check questions, lasts about 30 minutes. All residents are required to view the presentations and work out the answers to the questions before attending the workshop. The progress in watching lectures was tracked within the software. When residents arrived on-site attending the workshop on day one, the knowledge-check questions were reviewed and discussed. Different labs focusing on the hands-on SRS/SRT experience were provided. On day two, clinical cases were observed, reviewed and discussed.
Results: Eight physics residents and one external faculty attended the workshop and provided their feedback through a survey.
Conclusion: The innovative teaching workshop, consisting of pre-recorded presentations, knowledge-check question review and discussion in classroom, extensive hands-on experience through multiple labs, and clinical case observations, is determined to be very effective and has received very positive feedback from all participants. In contrast to the traditional format of a teaching workshop with intensive presentations in classroom, pre-recorded presentations allow both a presenter to prepare lectures and a participant to watch lectures at a flexible time. Most importantly the new format allows lecturers to have time to go over important points with a prepared audience and allows participants more time to gain hands-on experience.
