Effective Dose Associated with Routine CT Examinations of the Abdomen and Pelvis with Iodinated Contrast

Purpose: To relay clinical data in support of lowering published effective dose estimates for a routine CT exam of the abdomen and pelvis with iodinated contrast.

Methods: Utilized dose management software to gather data on 52,106 CT abdomen and pelvis exams taken from 2016 – 2019 across the Houston Methodist Hospital system. Data parameters included dose length product (mGy*cm), CT dose index volume (mGy), size specific dose estimate (mGy), and effective dose (mSv). The effective dose was calculate from k factor (mSv*mGy^-1*cm^-1) values of 0.015 multiplied by the dose length product.

Results: Analysis of this data yielded that since 2016 the average effective dose via k factor multiplied by dose length product was 6.69 mSV. The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) have supported data that estimates the average dose of a routine abdomen and pelvis exam with contrast has an effective dose of 10mSv.

Conclusion: The indications of this work have the potential to update or reconsider the published average effective dose for adult CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis region with iodinated contrast. The average effective dose of this work was 33.1% lower than the average effective dose supported by American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Radiology Society of North America (RSNA).
