Several novel imaging technologies are being developed for clinical and pre-clinical radiation treatment. The limit of IGRT accuracy using x-ray CT is being investigated with a novel integration of a helical CT scanner with the treatment couch for on-line applications. Ultrasound imaging, using robotic control or flexible probe, can be employed for intra-fraction monitoring to complement the new CT-Couch concept. Advances must also be made in pre-clinical radiation research, where optical (bioluminescence and fluorescence) tomographic imaging offers a new level of quantitative assessment of treatment response beyond the conventional analysis of surface images of the animal.
