AAPM Medical Physics Student Meeting: Patient Communication - A Future Role for Clinical Physicists

T Atwood1*, D Brown1*, (1) University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA

Presentations

(Sunday, 7/14/2019) 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Room: Stars at Night Ballroom 4

The Annual Student Meeting this year will explore patient communication and how it specifically pertains to medical physicists. Research suggests that there is a link between patient stress and anxiety regarding technical aspects before images or treatment have even begun. Questions regarding radiation safety or accuracy of delivery are often not addressed by medical physicists despite being very well suited to answer.

Drs. Todd Atwood and Derek Brown have completed a phase II clinical trial at the University of California San Diego to investigate a new clinical role for medical physicists in direct patient care. They will give a presentation on the work & vision of their findings followed by a discussion facilitated by student moderators and questions from the audience.

Join us in this session to find out how this new role for clinical medical physicists can improve patient care.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn about a new role for medical physicists
2. Examine how this new role impacts patient outcome
3. Pick up tools on how to effectively communicate with patients
