Room: 221CD

These presentations are to memorialize Libby Brateman, PhD by discussing current educational, professional and mammography issues that she championed. Dr. McKetty will introduce the audience to Dr. Brateman’s life and how she impacted the professional of clinical medical physics.

Dr. Brateman was active in the development and implementation of CAMPEP programs at the University of Florida. Dr. Leon was a graduate student mentored by Dr. Brateman and is now the UF’s Assistant Program Director for both the graduate and the diagnostic residency programs. She will discuss how UF Radiology educates new medical physicists and the importance of mentoring new physicists.

Dr. Brateman worked tirelessly on the state of Florida’s medical physics licensure law and its subsequent implementation. Mr. Pizzutiello will project on the future of medical physics licensure in the US by reviewing the history and current status of licensure in Florida, Hawaii, New York and Texas.

Ms. Gilley worked closely with Dr. Brateman during the Florida licensure activities and other regulatory initiatives in the state. She will discuss the profound impact that guidance and regulations have on medical physicists and quality of care.

As a medical physicist and a breast cancer survivor, Dr. Brateman was both intellectually and personally interested in promoting quality mammography through quality standards, regulations and physics testing. Ms. Butler will discuss the history of the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) Mammography Accreditation Program, the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), the ACR’s 2018 Digital Mammography Quality Control Manual and the FDA MQSA Proposed Rule published in March 2018.

Dr. Brateman was passionate about educating and mentoring young medical physicists, enhancing the professionalism and recognition of medical physicists through guidance, licensure and regulation and quality mammography to improve breast cancer detection and diagnosis. Her legacy continues through those she mentored and worked with throughout the years.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the importance of educating and mentoring new medical physicists.
2. Understand the issues related to medical physicist licensure.
3. Understand issues related to regulations and guidance that impact the profession.
3. Understand current issues related to quality and safety in mammography.
