(Wednesday, 7/17/2019) 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM

Room: 302

Non-clinical careers offer many unique benefits and challenges to medical physicists, but many physicists are not familiar with these careers or how to embark on them. In this session, three representatives will discuss examples of non-clinical career options for medical physicists. Specifically, medical physics careers in the military, academia, and international organizations will be discussed. These careers will be detailed, compared, and contrasted with typical clinical physics positions. Interspersed throughout the talks will be advice detailing how to best prepare for non-clinical medical physics careers, supplemental training that can be pursued while working full time, strategies to search for non-clinical positions, and advice on how best to highlight skills being sought for these positions when applying and interviewing.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will become familiar with the wide variety of non-clinical medical physics careers.
2. Participants will become familiar with the AAPM resources available for seeking and maintaining a non-clinical medical physics career.
3. Participants will become familiar with characteristics and skills that are desirable in non-clinical medical physics roles.
4. Participants will gain an appreciation of the non-technical challenges faced when moving from a clinical education or environment to non-clinical roles.
