A Streamlined Monthly QA Process Using a Novel Phantom

Purpose: A streamlined quality assurance process was developed using a novel phantom design to allow complete TG-142 compliant monthly checks in less time than previously achieved.

Methods: The phantom was designed in support of a QA process which was developed using multiple phantoms. In clinical use, baseline values are established following machine performance verification by conventional methods at the time of commissioning and/or annual checks. Monthly checks are performed using a QA patient in the R&V system and the results are compared to the baseline values. Machine output constancy is verified with a simplified setup and electron energy checks are performed with a dedicated insert in the electron applicator.

Results: The results of tests using the phantom were compared to those from traditional monthly QA practices for validation of the process and the phantom. Preliminary use of the phantom and associated process shows a significantly reduced time for monthly QA checks.

Conclusion: The created monthly QA process, in conjunction with the novel phantom, results in a streamlined and efficient process to perform monthly QA which satisfies the recommendations of TG-142.
