Diagnostic x-ray CT is the most widely used tomographic imaging modality and CT is the workhorse of the radiologist. Moreover, the modality is highly mature. Therefore, diagnostic CT is, and has always been, the precursor for other x-ray-based tomographic modalities such as cone-beam CT, dental CT, breast CT, and also industrial CT. Despite its sophistication, diagnostic CT is still being further developed. X-ray doses must be reduced, image quality must be increased, and new applications will be identified. This keynote presentation, and the contributions following in this session, highlights some of the important developments, such as iterative image reconstruction, the use of prior knowledge, motion compensation, the introduction of photon counting detectors, and the use of machine learning in the field of CT.
