Improving Health Through Medical Physics

AAPM Statement on SCOTUS Ruling on Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization

July 15, 2022

As a scientific and professional organization working in healthcare, AAPM is committed to advancing human health through the science and practice of medical physics. The AAPM mission holds as paramount the best interests of patients: we respect patient autonomy, dignity, and privacy, and we recognize the importance of shared, informed decision-making between patients and their healthcare providers. While we respect that there are diverse opinions, AAPM has strong concerns about the ramifications of the SCOTUS Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling for our mission and our members. These ramifications undermine the privacy, safety, and healthcare autonomy of patients, influence their willingness to seek preventative or curative care, and exacerbate healthcare inequities that are disproportionately borne by under-served and marginalized populations. AAPM urges legislators and regulators to work together with physicians, healthcare professionals, and patients to ensure access to safe, legal, and equitable healthcare for all patients.

Headquartered in Alexandria, VA, AAPM is the largest medical physics organization in the nation, representing nearly 10,000 medical physicists and associated professionals. The mission of AAPM is advancing medicine through excellence in the science, education, and professional practice of medical physics, a broad-based scientific and professional discipline which encompasses physical principles with applications in biology and medicine.
