Purpose: create a comprehensive verification system (VS) covering all steps in patient planning, including CT-simulation, contouring, plan optimization and data transfer to the record and verify system (RVS). The VS can interface directly with the treatment planning system (TPS) and RVS to obtain patient data quickly and accurately. The VS also communicates with a database containing the radiation oncologist’s dosimetric goals for the targets and OARs. Verification results are stored in the database to create continuity in the verification process and allow for easy revision and retrospective analysis.
Methods: interface was created in wxPython, accessible from within the TPS. When opened, the interface queries the database to generate an overview displaying the status of each verification step: whether it has been completed, when and by whom. When a verification step is selected, a checklist is generated; each item may have a script associated with it to facilitate its verification. These scripts can read patient information from the TPS, the RVS and the database containing the radiation oncologist’s planning goals, allowing for quick comparisons and calculations. Upon completing the checklist, the results are stored in the database and may be consulted at the next step in the verification chain.
Results: verification system has been implemented clinically across all phases of treatment planning. The system has helped to standardize verifications and has improved communication between the different sectors in the department.
Conclusion: plan verifications directly into the TPS and RVS allows for fast, automated verifications. Use of the database allows us to link the verification steps together, preserving information from one verification to the next. Retrospective studies can be performed on the verification results, allowing us to identify trouble spots in our planning process.
