Room: Track 7

This session will begin with an introduction and background related to linac beam scanning systems. Linac beam scanning systems are an essential tool in any radiation therapy clinic. They enable medical physicists to quickly and efficiently acquire the measured data required for a variety of clinical and/or research tasks, including but not limited to linac or TPS commissioning and annual QA. The primary components of a scanning tank include a water tank, a scanning mount, and a reference mount. Scanning systems come with a variety of features, including those that can scan in 1-, 2-, or 3- dimensions, and those that can be programmed for automated scanning. Particular combinations of features are best suited to various clinical tasks. Vendor presentations will follow this introduction.

General Presentation Outline:
The introduction will answer the following questions:
What is a linac beam scanning system?
What are linac beam scanning systems used for?
What are the essential components of a beam scanning system?
What are some general considerations for using beam scanning systems? How can you detect setup errors?

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand what beam scanning systems are and how they are used clinically.
2. Understand how to evaluate results from beam scanning systems.
3. Gain familiarity with commercially available linac beam scanning systems.
