Room: Track 4
NCRP report 147 and AAPM TG 108 are widely used reports for radiation shielding design and were fairly comprehensive for their time. However, there have been many changes in radiology in the past 16 years, and a review and update of these standards is warranted. There are now software packages available to perform detailed shielding design analysis, more imaging modalities such as digital breast tomosynthesis, different isotopes used in nuclear medicine, and a more recent shielding design report from the United Kingdom. There are also gray areas commonly encountered by physicists, such as rules for fixed C-arm installations, control rooms shared by multiple x-ray units, and treatment of shielding in the OR environment. The suggested symposium will focus on updates to radiation shielding design, and a review of old and new methods.
Learning Objectives:
1. Shielding design for modalities not included in NCRP 147 and AAPM TG 108
2. Updated workload distributions
3. Automated tools and methods for shielding design
4. Shielding design methods employed by physicists in the United Kingdom
