Room: Track 6

Social media has evolved into a powerful and influential tool for medical professionals around the world. Physicians from all specialties have embraced social media, primarily Twitter, as a way to share their expertise and connect with colleagues. This is especially true of radiation oncologists, who have successfully used social media campaigns to promote the work of women in the field (#WomenWhoCurie) and to concentrate efforts ahead of ASTRO Advocacy Day (#ASTROadvocacy and #FixPriorAuth).

As both medical professionals and scientists, the medical physics community should follow the lead of our physician counterparts. Through increased involvement in social media, medical physicists have an opportunity to advocate for our profession in a new and meaningful way. In addition to highlighting all of the important work that is being done behind the scenes to ensure the successful delivery of treatment, social media provides tools for medical physicists to share research, support students and colleagues, initiate collaborations, educate patients, and promote diversity and inclusion.

This panel discussion will serve as an introduction to social media, while providing an overview on how social media is currently being used by medical physicists and radiation oncologists. Speakers from institutions of different sizes and practice environments will discuss a variety of topics, including tutorials on how to get started with social media, case studies of success and failure, and the impact social media has on students and trainees.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how to get started with social media as a medical physicist
2. Discuss ways social media can be used to benefit our profession
3. Review how medical physicists and radiation oncologists are successfully using social media
