Purpose: study aims at the development of a flexible film dosimeter as an in vivo dosimeter and an evaluation of its dosimetric characteristics.

Methods: estimate a delivered dose of irradiation, a flexible film dosimeter was constructed using the active layers of radiocromic-sensitive films and flexible silicon materials. The dose-response, sensitivity, scanning orientation, energy, dose rate, and dependence of the developed dosimeter were tested. Irradiated dosimeters were scanned 24-h post-irradiation. The region of interest considered during the measurement and analysis of the images was 5 × 5 mm²in size. Biological stability tests assured the safety of application of the flexible film dosimeter for patients, and a preliminary clinical study was implemented on four patients to evaluate the in vivo dosimetry of the flexible film dosimeter.

Results: red channel demonstrated the highest sensitivity among the three colors. The response sensitivity of the dosimeter decreased with the applied dose. This result corresponds with results obtained in previously reported EBT film studies. No significant energy dependence was observed for the given photon beams (6 MV, 6 MV FFF, 10 MV, or 15 MV). Moreover, no substantial dose rate dependence with 6 MV or 6 MV FFF was shown. The biological stability of the developed flexible film dosimeter was demonstrated through biological tests, including cytotoxicity, irritation, and skin sensitization. The difference between the measurement and calculation results ranged from -0.1% to 1.2% for all patients.

Conclusion: developed dosimeter is a flexible film capable of attachment to a curved skin surface. The biological test results indicate the stability of the device. An analysis of the dose characteristics and the results of the preliminary clinical study show that the flexible film dosimeter can be applied as an in vivo dosimeter during radiotherapy.
