Purpose:
The goal is to determine whether using information from surface-guided imaging to improve CT image quality.
Methods:
An image quality phantom was generated in software that contained both spatial and contrast resolution components. A simple iterative algebraic reconstruction algorithm was created. Within the algorithm the boundaries of the patient was defined; this was to simulate information that comes from surface-guided imaging system. During the reconstruction, the known volumes outside the surface of the phantom was forced to be empty.
Results:
The surface-guided information limited the volume of which the algorithm had reconstruct. This boosted the efficiency of the iterative process, producing images with similar-to-superior image quality, faster. However artifacts are generated by over-reporting pixel value along the edges of the phantom.
Conclusion:
As presented now, the benefit of combining surface imaging with CT is inclusive with some offsetting tradeoffs. Perhaps the model presented here is too simplistic and does not take advantage of more advance reconstruction techniques which would enhance the impact of combining these imaging technologies.
