Room: Track 2

Image-guided surgery and interventional radiology procedures, while still principally in the investigational stage, are becoming common in many clinical centers. While using similar tools as radiation therapy, because of differences in treatment delivery, surgical and radiology procedures often employ these tools in different ways. This session will explore the next steps for this field by reviewing several areas of investigation:

Photonics for Guiding, Monitoring and Treating in Surgical Procedures: Using clinical examples, planning and dosimetry methods in photodynamic and photothermal therapies will be presented. Optical imaging modalities used for response monitoring will also be discussed, including diffuse optical tomography and fluorescence guided surgery.

Planning and Monitoring of MR-Guided Ablations: MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound therapy in brain and prostate will be presented, with a focus on HIFU treatment planning methods and MR thermometry for real-time treatment monitoring.

Integration of Robotics and Navigation with Intra-operative Imaging: Presented work will focus on novel methods using intra-operative C-arm imaging, such as 2D x-ray fluoroscopy and 3D cone-beam CT, and their application in spine and pelvic interventions. The role of image registration as a means to extract quantitative information will be discussed with respect to 2D/3D imaging, surgical navigation, and robotic surgery.

Learning Objectives:
1. Methods of treatment planning, dosimetry and response monitoring in phototherapies
2. Understanding how to obtain quantitative procedure information when using image registration
3. How treatment planning and real-time response monitoring is used for MR-guided ablative therapies
