Purpose:
This work quantifies the current AAPM Governance demographics from available data, as It has not been published previously. The goal is to compare AAPM leadership versus the general membership to highlight similarities and discrepancy. Hopefully the data will be used to change current practices to make AAPM Leadership more inclusive.
Methods:
Using AAPM’s website, data was collected from committee webpages and member profiles. The data was then categorized into Gender, Place of Work, Type of Work, Education, and Specialty.
Results:
AAPM governance gender demographics are 78% male 22% female vs, place of work is 63% academia and 37% clinical, education is 78% with PhD and 22% with Masters, specialty is 66% Therapeutic, 30% Diagnostic, 2% Nuclear Medicine, and 2% Health Physicist. Therapeutic Physicist and Physicist working in the clinic are underrepresented in AAPM Leadership. While therapeutic physicist make up 80% of the general membership they only account for 66% of Leadership. Physicist working in academia account for almost half (43%) of AAPM Leadership; while account for 13% of the general membership. AAPM has 1553 of its 8911 members participate in its governance.
Conclusion:
This work quantifies some of the AAPM’s governance demographics. It also highlights that a small group of individuals and institutions have a significant control of AAPM’s governance. The data should be used to help the AAPM enact rule changes to better serve its membership and create a more transparent and inclusive leadership.
