A Simple Test Tool to Optimize Protocol in Real Time Fluoroscopic Imaging

Purpose : Optimisation of image quality using image resolution tool is common in radiography, however there are several challenges in real time imaging. The purpose of the study is to fabricate a test tool to evaluate spatial, contrast and temporal resolution test tool in real time fluoroscopy imaging.

Methods: A prespex disc of diameter 5.5 in was embedded with 12 spatial and 24 contrast resolution objects. The disc was mounted over a stepper motor controlled by arduino UNO. The motor was allowed to rotate at a defined speed for different fluoroscopy protocols (different pulse and frame rates) used in Radiological investigations.

Results : The pulse and frame modes in fluoroscopy matched with the appropriate speed selected in the test tool. This also depended on the pulse width set in the fluoroscopy system for cardiac as well routine radiological investigations. The temporal and spatial resolution was distinctly visualised when lower pulse widths were selected in cardiac protocols. The contrast resolution was restricted to 45% in any setting. When longer pulse widths were selected, images appeared blurred resulting in a reduction of spatial and temporal resolution.

Conclusion : This test tool was useful in optimizing real time fluoroscopy imaging protocols involving pediatric and cardiac studies.
