Stereotactic Breast Biopsy and Beyond: Principles and Radiologists' Perspectives

I Reiser*, K Kulkarni*, The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL

Presentations

(Tuesday, 7/14/2020) 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM [Eastern Time (GMT-4)]

Room: Track 4

This session discusses stereotactic breast imaging first from a physicists, then from a radiologists perspective. First, the physics of stereotactic and tomosynthesis image guidance of breast biopsy are presented, including imaging geometries, targeting principles and precision, and artifacts due to the presence of the biopsy needle in the imaging field-of-view. In the second portion of this session, a radiologist discusses the overall workflow from screening to diagnostic imaging, that prompt use of stereotactic breast biopsy. The steps during the stereotactic biopsy including specimen imaging and needle localization will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the differences of lesion targeting principles in stereotactic imaging and tomosynthesis imaging
2. Understand the artifacts in DBT images for stereotactic guidance
3. Understand the clinical workflow and imaging findings that prompt stereotactic breast biopsy
4. Understand the utility of specimen imaging during stereotactic biopsy and needle localizeation procedure.
