G Hogan*, SC&H Capital, Ellicott City, MD

Presentations

(Sunday, 7/12/2020)   [Eastern Time (GMT-4)]

Room: AAPM ePoster Library

Purpose: To provide owners and executives of medical physics practices with insight on: the current state of the Merger & Acquisition market for medical physics practices, industry and market factors contributing to the increasing trend in consolidation, how buyers value medical physics practices, how owners can create a more valuable physics practice, and the impact of industry consolidation on independent physics practices.

Methods: The speaker has executed numerous financial advisory engagements for owners of medical physics firms resulting in successful sale transactions. As a result of the processes run to execute these engagements, the speaker has a unique understanding of how the industry landscape is changing, how buyers and investors value medical physics firms, and how owners can prepare for a successful sale/transition of a practice.

Results: The medical physics sector has seen a significant amount of M&A activity in recent years—so much so that this important niche of the healthcare industry will look very different in three to five years than it does today. The shift from fee for service to value based care reimbursement models, continued technological advancements, and the ever increasing level of regulation within the healthcare market is putting pressure on medical physics firms to be aware of, and responsive to, changing trends in how large hospitals and medical systems purchase medical physics services. These broader healthcare market changes are driving consolidation in the sector as medical physics customers are seeking more sophisticated providers with larger and more specialized workforces.

Conclusion: Given the significant pace of change in the industry, the owners of medical physics businesses will benefit from understanding the market forces affecting the value of their business, strategic growth plans, and their succession and transition planning options.
