Innovations in clinical radiation therapy are often based on the results of small animal studies mimicking clinical scenarios. Until recently, the technology and dose delivery accuracy of small animal irradiators severely lagged behind radiotherapy machines used in the clinical practice, which may have been a cause of the observed discrepancies between preclinical and clinical radiation treatment outcomes.
In this symposia, two speakers will give an overview of their technological advancements of small animal irradiators. First, image-guided small animal radiotherapy and its associated challenges will be introduced and improvements in dose delivery verification through electronic portal imaging device (EPID) will be described. Second, the development of state-of-the-art intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) to small animal irradiations will be presented. The third speaker will talk on the application of small animal radiotherapy for normal tissue toxicity studies. Radiation induced cardiac and lung toxicity remain the most critical dose limiting constraints in radiotherapy and a major cause of mortality amongst cancer survivors. The impact of heart and lung irradiation in preclinical models towards developing a mechanistic understanding of regional radiosensitivity will be described.
