(Wednesday, 7/15/2020) 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM [Eastern Time (GMT-4)]

Room: Track 6

In the complex, multidisciplinary environment that medical physicists work in it is becoming increasingly important that they are able to communicate effectively. Whether with patients or professional colleagues, effective clinical communication is key to expanding our professional role and to ensuring a safe and effective team approach to patient care.
In this symposium, speakers from institutions of different sizes and practice environments will share best practices, practical advice, and experiences on how to develop and maintain effective clinical communication skills. Studies looking at the impact of including clinical communication training in graduate and residency programs will be presented and discussed, and practical advice for teaching medical physicists to be better clinical communicators will be provided.

Learning Objectives:
1. To understand how and why clinical communication training should be included in graduate and residency programs.
2. To learn how graduate and residency training programs impact learners confidence in, and ability to, communicate in the clinical environment.
3. To discuss some practical advice for teaching medical physicists to be better clinical communicators.

Funding Support, Disclosures, and Conflict of Interest: I receive honorariums from Varian Medical Systems for presentations.
