More Than Just a Pretty Picture: Making MRI Quantitative

In this combined education and scientific session, we will overview the basic concepts, key methods and strategies, and clinical and research applications of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI). Unlike many other medical imaging modalities, like computed tomography (CT), the numerical intensity values of pixels in MR images do not directly correspond to physical quantities. As such MR images are typically interpreted in a subjective manner based on relative contrast and morphological features. However, by acquiring multiple images each obtained under specifically different scan parameterizations, it is possible to fit physics-based models to these signals and extract quantitative information about the MRI subject and/or system. Our speakers will overview the basic definitions, setup, and control processes for performing qMRI experiments, discuss sources of quantitative error that can occur both during data acquisition and computational model fitting, and provide detail about the practical advantage performing qMRI can provide in both research and clinical practical.
