Purpose: Using a Leeds TOR CDR radiographic phantom, this study investigated the image quality of three Samsung GM85 mobile digital radiographic units. Image quality comparison was made to another established digital radiographic unit and the optimal techniques for the regular quality control(QC) of the Samsung GM85 mobile digital radiographic unit were investigated.

Methods: For the three portable units, the TOR CDR phantom was placed at 100 cm from the x-ray source, directly on the surface of the digital detector platform. A 1-mm copper sheet was placed directly on the phantom. Contrast-detail and high-contrast resolution evaluations were made at 50 KV, 70 KV and 100 KV at mAs settings between 3 mAs and 32mAs. The same assessments were made with a Philips DigitalDiagnost digital radiographic unit to complete a performance comparison between the two different types of units.

Results: The results suggest that the technique factors of 50 KV and about 3 mAs are optimal for image quality assessments and quality control on the mobile radiographic units. The image quality degrades rapidly at higher mAs and at Higher KV. On the other hand, for the Philips digital radiographic unit, less variability was observed in the image quality assessment at 50 KV and 70 KV at all the tested mAs. At 100 KV, the Image quality of the Philips unit degrades rapidly at 20 mAs and higher.

Conclusion: In conclusion, this study suggests that regular QC of the Samsung portable radiographic units using TOR CDR phantom should be done at 50KV and about 3 mAs with 1-mm copper filtration. In addition, our results also suggest that the optimal radiographic QC techniques should be optimized for different units.
