Functional imaging is becoming an increasingly important component in the radiation treatment planning process. This session on functional treatment planning will cover a wide array of clinical situations where functional imaging is being used to optimize radiation treatment plan design. The session will cover various disease sites including lung, liver, head and neck, and brain. Topics will include the use of functional imaging for both normal tissue sparing as well as more physiologically accurate target delineation. Treatment techniques presented will include both photon and proton therapy and functional imaging modalities discussed will include Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Positron Emission Tomography, and Computed Tomography-based methods. Each speaker will describe the pertinent functional imaging modality, provide details on how the functional imaging is being incorporated into the treatment planning process, and present the potential clinical benefit for incorporating functional imaging into the respective radiation treatment paradigms. Functional imaging will play an increasingly important role in radiation therapy. The speakers in this session will highlight some of the seminal work progressing the use of functional imaging in radiation therapy.

2. Understand how each modality is being incorporated into the treatment planning paradigm.
3. Understand the clinical rationale for incorporating functional imaging into radiation therapy treatment planning.
