Reject rate analysis is an essential component of radiography quality control. In the era of digital radiography, reject rate analysis receives little attention compared to the days of screen-film radiography, possibly due to the lack of a financial incentive from reducing film waste. However, it is still important as rejected images constitute unnecessary dose to patients and can be a key indicator of quality issues, such as a need for training. While the concept of reject rate analysis is straightforward, it can be challenging to collect accurate and meaningful reject rate data in the PACS era. In particular, information provided from voluntary technologist reporting, not data directly linked to the acquisition, is likely to create inaccurate data with little meaningful information. Additionally, reject rate analysis can be difficult or time-consuming in a multi-vendor or model environment due to a lack of standardization of reports generated by radiographic units from different vendors. AAPM report 151 suggests a reject rate of 8-10% for adult general radiography, but many practices may find it challenging to reach this benchmark. The purpose of this symposium is to teach how to achieve meaningful reject rate analysis that can add to quality improvement in radiography.
