Novel Applications in Cardiac Imaging and Therapeutics

The World Health Organization states that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death globally. 18 million people die from CVD annually, with 85% due to heart attack and stroke. To address this worldwide problem a tremendous amount of research and development is invested in prevention, early detection and treatment. These research streams span education campaigns, point of care diagnostics, epidemiology, genetics, artificial intelligence, fluid dynamics, systems modelling, smart implantable technology, drug discovery, signal processing, advanced imaging and novel therapeutics. This joint imaging/therapy scientific session will cover some of these advances, focusing on areas that medical physicists are heavily involved in, including the repurposing of devices that are traditionally used for cancer treatment to CVD treatments.

The session will begin with a general discussion of cardiac imaging and interventional applications followed by two disease-specific presentations on x-ray and MRI guided-ablative radiotherapy to treat atrial fibrillation and the clinical experience, technical challenges and future plans for using image guided radiation therapy to treat ventricular tachycardia. Audience questions will be answered in a panel discussion.
