Room: Stars at Night Ballroom 4

Medical Physicists are scientists, yet they are also managers of science teams and interdisciplinary team leaders. Yet few medical physicists have the opportunity to acquire formal leadership training. This session is designed to give medical physicists insights from management science on building effective team structures, basic negotiation toola, and delegation skills.

In this session, medical physicists who have gained a Masters in Business Administration share what they have learned from the experts in the field of business. The first lecture will focus on the eight characteristics of a successful team, including tools to move teams toward better functionality. Teamwork and leadership also includes effective delegation of tasks to team members and mentees. Clearly structured delegation increases the chance that tasks get done well and on time. Additionally, a well delegated project can foster learning and growth in less experienced team members.

Negotiations happen every day in all aspects of our professional lives, yet most of us are trained in inefficient "win/lose" negotiation tactics. We will discuss how to identivfy integrative vs. distributive negotiations, how to expand the pie for more successful win-win negotiation outcomes, and touch on the challenges of inter-cultural negotiations in our diverse work environments.

Learning Objectives:
1) The 8 characteristics of highly functioning teams
2) Negotiation: Tools and Strategies
3) Effective delegation skills
