Room: 225BCD

For many years, both Medical Physics and JACMP have had a formal process for identifying the best scientific and clinical physics papers published the prior calendar year. The authors of the selected papers are honored at the Awards Ceremony at the annual meeting. Medical physics offers the Moses and Sylvia Sorkin Greenfield and Farrington Daniels Awards for the best imaging and therapy physics papers, respectively. JACMP has 4 such awards. Specifically, these four awards are named (1) Michael D. Mills Editor in Chief Award of Excellence for Outstanding General Medical Physics Article, (2) Peter R. Almond Award of Excellence for Outstanding Radiation Measurements Article, (3) George Starkschall Award of Excellence for Outstanding Radiation Oncology Physics Article, and (4) Edwin C. McCullough Award of Excellence for Outstanding Medical Imaging Physics Article. In this symposium, the Medical Physics and JACMP editors will highlight outstanding, high impact contributions published in AAPM Journals in 2018. Following announcement of the awards in May 2019, the first or corresponding author of each the following award winning manuscripts will be invited to speak for 15 minutes on their project.

1. 2018 Daniels awardee: Best therapy physics paper in Medical Physics
2. 2018 Greenfield awardee: Best imaging physics paper in Medical Physics
3. 2018 JACMP award: best general medical physics paper in JACMP
4. 2018 JACMP award: best medical Imaging physics paper in JACMP

Each speaker will address the following elements:
1. Provide a short summary of their paper and its significance
2. Where did the idea for this project originate? How did the authors come to choose and develop this project?
3. Were the authors surprised by being selected to receive an award?
4. How would you advise other researchers to select and develop high-impact research projects? What are some of the pitfalls to avoid?

In addition, the editors will invite an outstanding peer review contributor to address writing high quality manuscript reviews. This surprise speaker will (a) outline the important components and rubrics of reviews; and (b) offer their perspective on developing high impact papers

Learning Objectives:
1. to appreciate the breadth of scientific and clinical physics content on AAPM Journals;
2. to better understand the ingredients of cutting-edge high impact research studies and how to select and develop such projects; and
3. better appreciate some of the cutting-edge scientific and clinical developments in medical physics science
