Presentations

(Tuesday, 7/16/2019) 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM

Room: 303

Focused ultrasound has unique characteristics of deep tissue penetration, ability to focus energy to millimeter-sized volumes of tissue, and the absence of ionizing radiation. Further, at the acoustic focus, a range of tissue bioeffects can be elicited ranging from heating to mechanical disruption and lysis. When integrated with MR or ultrasound imaging, opportunities for real-time guidance and control of therapy arise. This session will discuss a range of focused ultrasound techniques being developed for specific clinical applications. The first presentation will give a comprehensive overview of the advancements of ultrasound therapy with image guidance and demonstrate existing clinical applications. The second presentation will discuss the use of focused ultrasound hyperthermia for achieving localized doxorubicin delivery in the body and potential applications in pediatric oncology. The third presentation will present the latest clinical and preclinical data for histotripsy, including treatments of liver cancer, thrombosis, and stroke. The final talk will discuss the use of ultrasound to open the blood-spinal cord barrier and important issues in the translation of this technology to the spine. These presentations will provide the audience with a broad survey of existing and emerging clinical applications of image-guided focused ultrasound therapy.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the current clinical applications of image-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).
2. Understand the importance of image guidance in HIFU.
3. Understand how HIFU can be used to facilitate drug delivery through mild heating and temperature-sensitive nanoparticles.
4. Understand how the mechanical energy of ultrasound can be used to achieve a wide range of bioeffects in tissue, and clinical applications under development.
5. Understand how HIFU can be used to disrupt vascular barriers to drug delivery in the spine and potential clinical applications.
