Purpose: The ABR Core Examination stresses integration of imaging physics into clinical practice and accordingly has shifted the focus from recall of facts to application of physics principles. Residents are expected not only to identify an artifact in a medical image but also to propose a mitigation strategy. Didactic lectures are ill-suited to preparing radiology residents for this challenge. We present the “Artifact of the Month, a new initiative to incorporate physics concepts into residents’ clinical work.

Methods: Residents are encouraged to submit artifacts they encounter during their clinical rotations to the image artifact committee, which consists of two medical physicists and two radiologists. With their submission, residents include images of the artifact, its name, an analysis of the cause, and a mitigation strategy. The committee meets every month to evaluate all submitted artifacts and select one as the “Artifact of the Month winner. We curate and summary all artifacts and their corresponding explanations and mitigation strategies each month. Quarterly, the committee reviews all artifacts formally in a conference setting.

Results: Since its inception in October 2017, we have collected more than 120 artifacts covering all imaging modalities. Approximately 50% (n=12) of the residents have submitted artifacts with some residents submitting every month. Residents have reported that this initiative has enhanced their understanding of physics concepts and helped them to connect those concepts to clinical practice.

Conclusion: This initiative partially fills the void between the current paradigm for radiology resident physics education and the mandate to integrate teaching into the clinical environment. Through this initiative, the residents learn to develop a problem solving mindset as they apply advanced medical physics concepts to their daily practice.
