The Influence of GSDF Calibration On a Primary Displays Quality Control Luminance Measurement Results

Purpose: This work evaluates the effect of timing of a display’s GSDF calibration on the display quality assurance luminance measurements performed with an external photometer.

Methods: Ten primary displays (Barco, MDCC-6130) located in radiology reading rooms were included in the evaluation. Two sets of quality control luminance measurements were performed for each display: 1) after the preset time from a display’s GSDF calibration and 2) after the corresponding recalibration. Each display’s calibration was performed using its built-in photometer and BarcoMediCalQA software. The TG-18LN and TG-18UNL test patterns were used for luminance measurements with an external photometer (RaySafe Solo Light). Ambient light was constant during all measurements. The luminance value of the TG-18LN test pattern was measured before and after each set of quality control measurements to check each display’s stability, respectively. The repeatability of measured luminance values and variations of each display’s uniformity were calculated. The paired t-test was used to compare before and after GSDF calibration luminance observations.

Results: For seven tested displays that were GSDF calibrated for 4 weeks or more before the luminance measurements, the change in luminance values of TG-18LN patterns after recalibration was between 1.7% and 9.1% and was statistically significant (p = ≤ 0.003). The most notable change was observed in luminance values of the TG-18LN18 test pattern, which had up to 25 cd/m2 difference between the built-in photometer and external photometer. The change in display uniformity after recalibration was not statistically significant (p = ≤ 0.14) for all tested displays.

Conclusion: Although it is expected that a display’s luminance values may decrease over time, there is a variation in a display’s luminance measurements due to the calibration timing of the displays.
