Brachytherapy is a highly efficient radiation therapy technique, often associated with a reduced number of fractions and large doses per fraction. For example, in recent clinical trials for localized prostate cancer, high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy is used as monotherapy to deliver a whole treatment in one fraction of 19-20Gy. In this context, accuracy and precision of the treatment become crucial for both patient safety and efficacy of the treatment. Both these goals, together with overall patient experience, require infrastructure, processes and a patient-centered team mindset for further developments and improvements.

This education session will tackle various aspects related to these issues, namely: a) evidence-based using an incident learning system, b) the use of in vivo dosimetry in providing hard data for improving safety and efficiency, c) procedure optimization from the perspective of a patient-centric process and finally, d) perspective from an experienced brachytherapy physician.

1. Understand the role an incident learning system to improve brachytherapy procedures.
2. Understand the role of in vivo dosimetry in improving safety and efficiency.
3. Discuss various aspects of procedure optimization from the perspective of the patient and healthcare professional.
