Examination of Setup Training Method of Radiotherapy Using Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine the training method of patient setup for radiotherapy using virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR).

Methods: The training method using VR and the setup practice for radiotherapy system using mixed reality (MR system) was constructed for undergraduate third-grade students taking a Radiological Technology Course to get radiotherapeutic setup skills and understand setup. The students simulated the experience of a patient by using the 360° VR video. The MR system obtained inclination data from a gyro sensor was placed on top of the chest phantom or a real human’s chest. The constructed training method was evaluated by using the questionnaire based on ARCS model and the obtained inclination data. The questionnaire based on ARCS model evaluated 36 items regarding attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction in 5 stages.

Results: Total time spent in setup, time to touch the patient, and number of simulated pendant operations the couch were calculated from the inclination data. Before and after training, the mean total time spent in setup test became from 243.01±5.00 seconds to 149.85±85.46 seconds, and a p value was 0.002 (significance level is 0.05). The mean time touched on x-axis became from 28.00±21.49 seconds to 20.40±19.39 seconds, and a p value was 0.118. That time on y-axis became from 47.37±32.71 seconds to 34.92±30.05 seconds, and a p value was 0.103. That time on z-axis became from 29.22±22.85 seconds to 23.52±19.56 seconds, and a p value was 0.195. Each item of the ARCS model was about 80%. When assume the standard of the total score of each item of ARCS model was the median score of 60%, the training evaluation from the students were rated highly.

Conclusion: The training method using VR and MR was able to be constructed for getting radiotherapeutic setup skills.
