Developing An Automated Method for Pre-Treatment Data Transfer Checks

Purpose: Prior to beginning patient treatment, it must be ensured that data from the treatment planning system (TPS) was correctly transferred to the record and verify (R&V) system. Manually performing this check requires the time and attention of a trained individual. With this process automated, clinicians can dedicate more time to other tasks in the clinic while still verifying the transfer of data between the two systems.

Methods: Using Python, an application was created to automatically compare the data in the TPS and the R&V systems. The TPS used when developing this application was Pinnacle, while the compatible R&V system is Mosaiq. The application parses the Pinnacle DICOM files and the Mosaiq RTP files, creating a table with corresponding values from each system beside each other and assigns either a “pass� or “fail� indicator depending on whether or not they are consistent. The application is compatible with any TPS exporting according to DICOM standards.

Results: A hard data check can be performed between Pinnacle and Mosaiq to confirm consistency between general patient information and beam specific information. The comparison can be performed in a matter of seconds, making it significantly less time demanding than a manual comparison. There are currently some values which remain unchecked during the automated process but will be included in the near future.

Conclusion: The data transfer portion of a pre-treatment check can be automated and used to drastically reduce the amount of time required to complete the task while minimizing opportunity for human error.
