The Understanding and Courage to Lead – Part 1
It is the age-old question: are leaders born or are they made? Some leaders seem to emerge among a group of peers due to their inherent traits, but then fail to perform well in a formal role. Effective leaders instead display a particular subset of positive traits and behaviors. Fostering and developing these behaviors over time with practice can make leaders. Through these four sessions, Medical Physics Leadership Academy (MPLA) will have attendees interactively explore essential personal and interpersonal knowledge and skills founded in and related to empathy and courage – two key characteristics of effective leaders.

Exploring and Expressing Empathy
The first session of the series will examine empathy, how to practice it, and how to convey it with communication. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen as well as interact in this hands-on leadership development session.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how empathy relates to essential personal and interpersonal knowledge and skills, especially those of relationship management.
2. Experiment with applications of empathy, especially communication.
3. Adapt essential empathy skills in their own environments.
