Investigation of the Dose to Hands, and Eyes of Staff in Nuclear Medicine Departments in Shiraz

Purpose: According to ALARA principle (radiation protection optimization), the exposure to radiation should be reduced as low as reasonably achievable. This principle is very important in nuclear medicine, and different investigations have been performed by establishing protocols, and standards for staff protection. For this issue different factors i.e. Hp(10), Hp(0.07), and Hp(3) are defined. The aim of this study is to measure the Hp(10), Hp(0.07), and Hp(3) for nuclear medicine staff in Shiraz hospitals, and comparison with dose limits, and investigation of protection protocols for reduction of dose to staff.

Methods: In this study, two types of dosimeters, i.e. TLD-100, and GR-200 with different sensitivities were prepared and used. First the calibration of dosimeters was performed using different phantoms. Then a group of dosimeters were prepared and used for a duration of one month on their heads, wrists, and chests. After reading the TLDs, the quantities were measured, and the obtained values of Hp(10) were compared with the results of film badge dosimetry.

Results: The maximum difference were about 41 µSv showing good accuracy in our measurements. The results are in good agreement with the ORAMED results.

Conclusion: In this research using the dosimetry quantities, the radiation protection principles have been investigated. In future the goal can be achieved by establishing accurate protocols, and constructing radiation protection equipment.
