Predictive Value of PET SUV and Feature Changes in Radiotherapy for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Purpose: To explore the relationship between the metabolic parameters of FDG PET/CT molecular imaging and the short-term efficacy of radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to screen early effective indicators for predicting the short-term efficacy of NSCLC radiotherapy.

Methods: 21patients with histologically proven NSCLC were retrospectively investigated. All patients recived both pre-treatment and post-treatment 18F-FDG PET/CT scans. Four traditional features and five texture features were extracted from the tumor targets of PET scans from pre-treatment and post-treatment. Spearman coefficient correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the change rate of image features and the change rate of tumor volume after treatment. Patients were divided into two groups (Group1<50% and Group2≧50%) according to the change rate of tumor volume (≧50%) after 1 month of treatment. Finally, the Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine whether the change rate of PET/CT features can be used for differentiating the response of tumor to therapy.

Results: Spearman correlation analysis showed that the inverse different moment (RS 0.557, P = 0.009) and the maximum SUV (RS 0.468, P = 0.033) were correlated with the tumor volume change rate, but there were no statistical significances between tumor volume change rate and the other parameters. The results of Mann Whitney U test showed that both the the inverse different moment and the maximum SUV were statistically significant.

Conclusion: Among the nine selected indicators, only inverse different moment and maximum SUV have good predictive value, but this study is a retrospective study, with relatively few cases, fewer selected features and a lack of prospective. Therefore, this article is only a preliminary study, and follow-up studies are still in progress.
