Technical and Professional Preparations for Medical Physicists in the Upcoming MRgRT Era

With the advantages and benefits shown by the implementations of MRI simulators and newly available MRgRT systems, there is an increasing interest in incorporating MRI into radiation therapy (RT) workflow. However, building an MR program within RT departments is a challenging task. In this course, physicists who have been working with MR simulators or MR guided Radiation Therapy (MRgRT) systems will be invited to share the essential knowledge learned through their experiences. The following topics will be covered: 1) An overview of currently MR simulator implementations, which includes: MRI protocols in MRI simulation for different body sites, most commonly seen image artifacts and correction methods, procedures for MR only sites and MR+CT sites; 2) Workflow of MRgRT: real time MRI acquisition technique for soft tissue gated treatments, motion management for high quality onboard MRIs, image registration for both gated RT and adaptive RT. Focus will be given to unique challenges and solutions of MRI in the context of MRgRT; 3) Development of QA programs for “MR in RT�; 4) Preparation efforts for initiating a MR in RT program, including site planning, staff training and education, equipment selection. The course should provide the attendees a clear yet comprehensive review of the most relevant aspects when starting an MRgRT program.

Learning Objectives:
1.Learn different aspects that need to be taken into consideration when implementing MR in RT department: MR simulator or MRgRT system.
2.Learn the important skills needed for becoming a qualified MRRT physicist.
3.Learn the limitation of current MR techniques and future directions in the development of these techniques.
