Purpose: ClearCheck (Radformation Inc, New York) is a software for treatment plan evaluation. It is installed to interface with the Eclipse Treatment Planning System - TPS (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) so that one can query and obtain treatment plan indices without leaving the Eclipse TPS. Before deploying the software for clinical use, an internal validation is necessary to ensure that the automated calculations as performed by ClearCheck compare with calculations based on definitions. This was the purpose of this work.

Methods: In the first method, we used a patient plan and ClearCheck software to compute all constraints defined in the software. Then we repeated these calculations by hand, based on definitions. In the second method, we used treatment plans of eleven (n=11) previously treated patients. We used an in-house developed excel software to compute several indices commonly used in protocols for plan quality evaluation and compared with ClearCheck results.

Results: Our calculations agreed with the ClearCheck computed values. We observed for all 15 constraint values calculated, an average discrepancy of 0.09% ± 0.28%. Results of the patient treatment plans quality indices also agreed with ClearCheck’s. The observed average discrepancy between our calculated and ClearCheck values for all the 11 patient plans were 0.03% ± 0.33%, 0.01% ± 0.04%, -0.02% ± 0.05%, 0.07% ± 0.51%, 0.01% ± 0.34%, -0.45% ± 0.79%, 0.00% ± 0.05%, for PTV Coverage, Prescription IDL, Intermediate Dose Spillage, Conformity Index, Gradient Index, Lung V20, and PTV minimum dose respectively

Conclusion: The ClearCheck software has been validated based on hand calculations of the constraints and direct comparison with ClearCheck results. Furthermore, use of an in-house developed software to perform the same analysis show good agreement. Validation of the software should be done at each facility following installation.
