CT protocol design, development, and optimization can be a daunting process. Nevertheless, imaging medical physicists are uniquely equipped to spearhead the CT protocoling process. This session reviews the skills, strategies, and available resources that a medical physicist can employ to effectively guide CT protocol development.

There will be a review of CT protocol basics as well as the regulatory requirements associated with a CT protocol review. Patients come in all sizes, shapes, and ages; the discussion of protocol development will include special considerations and recommendations for pediatric populations. With dual-energy CT imaging more widely adopted, one lecture will specifically discuss the challenges and skills unique to imaging with dual-energy. Facilities rarely have the same make and model of CT scanner throughout their imaging enterprise. The final lecture will review sources of image quality variability and discuss methods for matching protocols.
